Demystifying 802.11n Power Consumption
نویسندگان
چکیده
We report what we believe to be the first measurements of the power consumption of an 802.11n NIC across a broad set of operating states (channel width, transmit power, rates, antennas, MIMO streams, sleep, and active modes). We find the popular practice of racing to sleep (by sending data at the highest possible rate) to be a useful heuristic to save energy, but that it does not always hold. We contribute three other useful heuristics: wide channels are an energy-efficient way to increase rates; multiple RF chains are more energy-efficient only when the channel is good enough to support the highest MIMO rates; and single antenna operation is always most energy-efficient for short packets.

Leveraging 802.11n frame aggregation to enhance QoS and power consumption in Wi-Fi networks
The Wi-Fi technology, driven by its tremendous success, is expanding into a wide variety of devices and applications. However, many of these new devices, like handheld devices, pose new challenges in terms of QoS and energy efficiency. In order to address these challenges, in this paper we study how the novel MAC aggregation mechanisms developed in the 802.11n standard can be used to enhance th...
متن کاملMIPS: MIMO Power Save in 802.11n Wireless Networks
A fundamental limitation of applying MIMO in batteryconstrained, 802.11n-enabled portable devices, is excessive power consumption of multiple active RF chains. We start our study in 802.11n MIMO power save (MIPS) by seeking to identify the factors that determine the most energy efficient chain setting. Surprisingly, our experimental results show that a) the fastest RF chain setting may not be t...

متن کاملPower Consumption and Energy Efficiency of 802.11 Network Devices
This paper examines the power consumption of IEEE 802.11standards with distance variations. The effectiveness of each standard is analysed over a small wireless network. Experiments carried out to analyse power consumed by 802.11 standards show that energy consumed during transmission of data is higher than that consumed during reception. Results from experiments carried out show that the power...
متن کاملLow Power IEEE 802.11n LDPC Decoder Hardware
In this paper, we present a low power hybrid low-density-parity-check (LDPC) decoder hardware implementing layered min-sum decoding algorithm for IEEE 802.11n Wireless LAN Standard. The LDPC decoder hardware, which has 27 check node datapaths and 24x162 variable node memory, is implemented in Verilog HDL and verified to work correctly in a Xilinx Virtex II FPGA. For 648 block length and 1/2 cod...
